Apple Introducing Facial Recognition Feature In iPhone & iPad

If you like to play around with your iPhone with new jailbreak tweaks, then I am sure that you might have tried out facial recognition tweak for the iPhone. Well, it did not get much popularity due to its clunky interface and most of all, the tweak was based on hit or miss. But we brought good news for you that Apple has filed a patent to introduce an official feature of facial recognition, probably in the next generation models of iPhone and iPad.

Apple Again Late To Introduce New Technology

Just like every time, Apple is a little late to introduce a new technology, as Google has already experimented and tested the feature and introduced the product called Google Goggles. Meanwhile, Microsoft has not left behind either, as they experimented on facial recognition feature and introduced it into their Kinect system, we know that it’s a bit slower, but it somehow recognizes the person when standing in front of the sensor and loads up their avatar.

Apple Insider Report on Facial Recognition Feature

A report from AppleInsider states that Apple’s version of facial recognition feature will let multiple users share a single device. It basically means that if one of the user try to unlock the device using facial recognition, the device will load up that particular user’s personal profile which will include wallpaper, applications and settings. The report also states that unlike the other features, Apple’s version of facial recognition will consume a small portion of power, so it will be able to stay on at all times, even the screen is off as well. So, if the user picks up the device from a distance, theoretically, it will be unlock the device without pressing a single button.

Details Given In The Patent

So, lets talk about how the technology will work. Apple’s application of Facial recognition states that it will be able to work in all type of lighting conditions and orientations which is obviously a great thing. The feature will have the ability to analyze biometric distortion on an image using device’s camera. Following are some other features described by the patent in detail:

Face recognition on consumer operated portable appliances that are equipped with a camera would unnecessarily use an appliance’s computing resources and drain its power. Moreover, as the consumer portable appliances tend to be used both indoor and outdoor, the […] systems for face recognition may be ineffective. Such ineffectiveness may be further exacerbated by the proximity of the user to the camera, i.e., small changes in distance to and tilt of the appliance’s camera dramatically distort features, making traditional biometrics used in security-type face recognition ineffective.

It definitely seems very right and if Apple continues to introduce new features, its products will be able to reach more close to the perfection.
