Guide to Install Gingerbread on HTC Desire

Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update is made available to the HTC Desire smartphone holders. Now you can update your Android Froyo 2.2 into Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread. Usually the updates are pushed to the users over the air but in this case you have to manually install it. So the users who are confident to install ROMs can try this by themselves. We are going to explain this simple procedure to you in an easy way. Following are the steps to install Android 2.3.3 “Gingerbread” on HTC Desire phone.

Stick with the old one if there are no problems

If you are happy with your Froyo 2.2, then you should not try to update your phone because this update on HTC is not a significant update. Or you can install CyanogenMod7 on your HTC Desire, this is also based on Android 2.3.4.

Procedure

So the first thing to keep in mind before update is that: all the date including apps, app settings, texts, and contacts will be completely deleted from your phone and it will be restored to the factory settings making it “debranded”. If your wireless carrier had installed any apps, they will be removed too.

Make sure you charge your phone fully before starting the update, because your device may brick if your battery discharges while updating.

First step is to have HTC Sync on your Desire, you can download it from the official website and then install it on your device. After that, Download the HTC Desire Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread file from the developer site of HTC. This is a zip file of 161MB. Now extract this file and you will find the whole update and two .apk files apps.

You have downloaded update on your PC, now connect your HTC device with your PC, and in the extracted folder find RUU_HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade (Gingerbread).exe and run it. Now you have to follow the instruction on the installer to install the update. Following are the screen shots of the update for the reference.

After the installation your phone will automatically boot into the Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread and you can download your deleted apps again from Android Market. Enjoy.
